hydrocal vs plaster of paris

it seems I go to the hobby shop...buy a crap load of stuff...and in about 2 hours im out of supplies! It costs me about Cdn$19/bag, and I am on my third already doing hardshell. I already had a two pound carton of Woodland Scenics Hydrocal … Plaster of Paris is 'softer', and can be carved. What has taken place.. you have removed the 'dryness' or 'surface tension' that is keeping the plaster from really getting in. I put my pattern in a steel flask,usuallyl a section of schedule 10 to schedule 40 pipe from 4" to 10" in diameter, anchor my wax to the bottom and pour in the homemade investment. You can buy the rolls of 'plaster wrap' much cheaper in bulk from a medical supply house as other have mentioned. This helps slow down the absorption process. Yeah, Jeffrey, that makes sense. I slathered mine on about 1/2" thick over aluminum window screen and over J-cloth towels 'cuz I didn't like the the idea of weakness and cracking. Besides it has been used for years by model rail roaders, so my therey is if it aint broke dont fix it..... Oh and plaster problems with bugs.... Never had them in colorado. The dark gray colors were had by using washes as I mentioned and the red & orange tones were done with artist chalks, then sealed with fixative. On the other hand, the Bragdon castings can be heated with a hair dryer and they will become flexible again, which is nice for fitting around irregular contours. Hydrocal … Hydrocal sets-up to rock-hardness, and in many cases, will support a person leaning on it to reach distant tracks. I am happy with the detail.. and this is the best shot I can show you. Its stronger. I would not use dirt(too much organic stuff in it). It's a slower method and takes longer to set up, but I like the results. I guess.. when you stir the spoon.. as it is in the pic.. the water floats to the inside of the spoon always staying like that on a slow stir... while the rest of the plaster is being mixed under the spoon. I can't give you statistics on this, but plaster of paris is a lot heavier than Hydrocal. I stopped using much plaster cloth after I discovered foam scenery. When hardened, it will permit removal of molds with "undercuts" whereas plaster of paris will break off detail. It is soft, even when cured and is not very strong. The other two are lime plaster, made from calcium hydroxide and sand, and cement plaster, a combination of plaster, sand, Portland cement and water. Another friend loves lightweight hydrocal. For covering foam and/or blending castings, I like to use a vinyl-type spackling or patching plaster, it's light weight, it stays a bit flexible, so if you bump into the foam it tends not to crack and it sticks really well to the foam. I find Plaster of Paris too soft, and subject to scratches and breakage. They just re-package the same materials you can buy elseware in bulk. But in my honest opinion you cut down on the bubbles.
